Joe Kubert, a pivotal name in the world of comic books, has passed away at the age of 85.

During his life, Kubert served as a professional artist, writer, editor and teacher. He is perhaps best known for his work on Hawkman and Sgt. Rock at DC Comics. He also founded The Kubert School in New Jersey, which educates students in cartooning and graphic art. Some of the more notable graduates of The Kubert School include Rags Morales, Amanda Conner, Shane Davis, Scott Kolins and Karl Kesel.

His sons, Andy Kubert and Adam Kubert, are both renowned comic book artists in their own right.

Kubert began drawing comics at the age of 12. He was still active when he passed away. His most recent effort was as the inking his son Andy’s pencils on Before Watchmen: Nite Owl.
