Joss Whedon has signed on to write and direct the sequel to this summer’s blockbuster hit, The Avengers.

Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Co. made the announcement today during an earnings call. Iger also said that Whedon is in talks to create an Avengers themed TV show for ABC.

Iger added that Whedon will “contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”

The Avengers has earned nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. It is the third highest grossing film of all time behind Titanic and Avatar.
Though the movie may not hit theaters until 2015, fans won’t have to wait that long to see some of the characters again. Iron Man 3 comes out May 3, 2012. Thor: The Dark World, comes out November 8, 2013. Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be released April 4, 2014.
