A surprising series of images from the Iron Man 3 set emerged online today, featuring actor James Badge Dale in an Iron Patriot costume.

In the Marvel Comics universe, Iron Patriot, an amalgamation of Iron Man and Captain America, was a heroic identity created by Norman Osborn (a.k.a. the Green Goblin) during the company’s Dark Reign storyline. However, as the film rights to the Norman Osborn character (and the entire Spider-Man cast) are owned by Columbia Pictures, fans should not count on Osborn being in the film.

In the film Dale plays Eric Savin, a soldier who became the cyborg superhero Coldblood after stepping on a land mine.

Scheduled for release on May 3, 2013, the movie will see the returns of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine. Ben Kingsley will appear as the villainous Mandarin, and Guy Pearce will play Aldrich Killian.
