In releases issued on their web site today, DC Comics formally announced the changed that would be made to Superman and his world in the company-wide reboot this September.

Action Comics, written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Rags Morales, will be set “a few years in the past,” and present “a bold new take on the classic hero.”

In this new DC Universe, Superman is struggling to find his place in the world, as he is still coming to terms with the loss of Krypton, as well as his adoptive parents. He is “more Kal-El from the planet Krypton than Clark Kent from Kansas.”

Lois Lane, meanwhile, is dating a co-worker at The Daily Planet, confirming rumors that the Clark Kent/Lois Lane marriage is no longer canon. She also has a different job at the paper. Clark Kent is living on his own.

Also, Superman will not be able to fly…at least not at first. He will be able to “leap tall buildings, but his ability to fly is in its infancy.” This is consistent with the way Superman’s powers originally evolved when he was created in the the ’30s.

The first story arc in Action will look at the origins of Superman’s costume, and will apparently begin with him wearing jeans and work boots.

While the first story arc in Action Comics will look at Superman’s recent history, Superman, written by George Perez and drawn by Jesus Merino, will deal with his present. In Superman, the Man of Steel will wear a suit that consists partially of Kryptonian armor.
