Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the film adaptation of the graphic novel by Brian Lee O’Malley, comes out August 13. But old school gamers may find the video game much more interesting than the movie.

Published by Ubisoft and scheduled for an August release on the Playstation Network, as well as XBox Live Arcade, the game is a blatant tribute/throwback to video games of the ’80s and ’90s.

“Video games have been a huge influence on the characters and world of Scott Pilgrim,” O’Malley said in a press release.  “As a gamer myself, it is a true pleasure to work closely with the talented team at Ubisoft to bring Scott to life on video game screens worldwide.”

The game follows the title character as he meets the girl of his dreams, but unfortunately her evil ex-boyfriends are soon out to kill him. It appears to be an old fashioned side-scrolling beat-em-up style game, reminiscent of older Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, as well as Double Dragon and Streets of Rage. It is reportedly filled with power ups, special maneuvers, weapons, group attacks and weapons. It even appears pixelated, as an older 8-bit game would.

“The storyline mirrors the escalating structure of a video game, and it is filled with clever homage to video game culture,” said Bill Kispert, Vice President of Interactive, Universal Partnerships & Licensing for Ubisoft. “We are thrilled to be collaborating with Ubisoft to bring fans a thoroughly entertaining interactive experience.”
